The headcoach of Gabon’s Senior national football team has been sacked and the national team dissolved following their inability to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations 2019 ,in Egypt.
Daniel Cousin who took over form Jose Antonio Camacho in September 2018 with a mandate to qualify Gabon for the AFCON or lose his job.
The decision was made known by the Gabonese Sport Minister Alain Claude Billie-By-Nze.
Gabon finished 3rd of Group C,with 10points, two below nation cup debutants and group runner-up Burundi and 6 points behind Mali who topped the group.
Gabon hosted the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and were sent packing at the group stage after recording 3 points in 3 games with Aubameyang scoring their only two goals in the tournament.
The Panthers were on the verge of qualifying for second successive AFCON since coming from last year’s demise at home during the 31st edition.
Arsenal striker, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang,29 has also received attack from fans and has been urged to retire from Gabon’s Senior national football selection.
The all time scorer and present captain of the team with 24 goals in 59 appearances failed to inspire his team to victory thereby qualifying for the June event this year.
The former Burrussia Dortmund striker is among some of Africa’s top players like Togo’s Emmanuel Adebayor and Burkina Faso trio,Aristide Bance Alain and Betrand Traoré who will be absent from the sport jamboree.
As it stands now,Gabon is yet to get a new head coach as they build up to the 2022 World Cup qualifier later this year. Gabon has never featured in a world cup tournament.
Gabon has featured for 7 AFCON tournaments with their best finish in 2012 when they finished as quarter finalist.
