Indomitable Lion of Cameroon forward, Ignatius Ganago was on target for his French Ligue one club, RC Lens, last weekend, scoring a last gasp goal against Monaco to hold them to a 2-2 draw, condemning Philippe Clement’s side to the Champions League play-off round.
Ganago’s 96th minute goal at the Stade Bolleart-Delelis, deprived Monaco an automatic Champions league qualification by helping Marseille who beat Strasbourg 4-0, finish second and grab the last Champions League Ticket in France.
Monaco let go the possibility of a direct qualification to the next edition of the Champions League by playing out a draw against Lens and so will have to play the Champions League qualifiers to be able to be in the next edition of the competition.
Lens, who has been on a good run lately, needed to beat Monaco, while hoping that both Strasbourg and Nice lost to secure a place in the Conference League, because of their difference in goal but rather propelled Marseille into an automatic qualification after going 2nd behind Paris Saint-Germaine.
The last encounter between these two teams, was back in August 2022, where RC Lens picked up a 2-0 win, with Ignatius Ganago and Simon Banza scoring the Two.
Lens are the only team Monaco has been unable to defeat since last season, recording two wins, two draws, picking up 62 points in the French Ligue one and seat 7th on the table. While AS Monaco finished third.
The Cameroon International striker counts five goals and one assist in 28 appearances made for Lens in the French league one this season and has been with the club since July 10, 2020.
He made his debut for the senior national football team of Cameroon in a friendly 0–0 tie against Tunisia, on October 12, 2019 and was part of the Bronze medal Squad in the 2021 AFCON on home soil.
The 23-year-old may be part of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon’s team that will take on Borundi and Namibia in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers as he has been named in Coach Rigobert Song Bahanag’s 34 man provisional squad.
