Former FC Barcelona forward Samuel Eto’o Fils, has been handed a 22-month suspended Sentence for tax fraud of £3.32million ( about 2,542,625,586.35 Central African CFA)
A Barcelona court found the 41_year_old guilty of failing to declare income from the transfer of image rights to Puma and Barcelona in his personal income tax return between 2006 and 2009.
According to Spanish outlet www.sport.es, Eto’o admitted the tax Fraud and accepted the 22 months sentence, though blamed his former representative José María Mesalles whom he has always described as a “second father.”
“It was my father who took care of the child I was then,’ Eto’o said. ‘I’m going to pay but I’ve always done what my father told me I had to do,” Eto’o is quoted via daily mail.co.uk.
Eto’o, who is now president of the Cameroon football federation, has accepted to repay the money.
It is understood that the prosecution initially asked for a four years and six months Sentence for Eto’o and his former agent Mesalles, but finally landed on a 22 months for Eto’o and one year for Mesalles.
