François Omam-Biyik was among the architects of Cameroon’s unforgetable 1990 World Cup exploits. The iconic front man scored a remarkable downward header to give the Lions a historic 1-0 win over defending champions Argentina in the opening match of the 1990 world cup, one of the most dramatic tournament openers.
Omam-Biyik scored a total of 26 goals in 73 appearances. He is Cameroon’s record World Cup player, with 11 matches in three tournaments.
The 54-year-old was a great scorer with the head and formed a terrific combination with Albert Roger Miller. He played at three World Cup finals in 1990,1994,1998 and remains the fourth most successful scorer of the Indomitable Lions. He queues behind Samuel Eto’o, Patrick Mboma and Roger Miller.
Omam-Biyik’s sublime header inspired most modern footballers like Cristiano Ronaldo and Robin Van Persie have performed a similar creative moves. His creativity and composure is undoubtedly a quality many strikers are aiming to possess.
Indeed there is something special Cameroonian strikers add to their goals,this makes them outstanding and unforgettable. Patrick Mboma for instance scored a fantastic overhead kick against France while Samuel Eto’o netted a long range strike against Brazil. For iconic forward François Omam-Biyik the world will certainly remember his stunning header from an unbelievable position.
The former Canon of Yaoundé prolific attacker has taken up a coaching career after his retirement. He replaced Thomas Libih at Union Sportive of Bitam in 2013 and has had other experiences with Palmeros,Real Colima,Saint Christophe and EGC Touvert.
François Omam-Biyik is currently Cameroon’s assistant headcoach under Portuguese tactician Toni Conceçao. He was appointed in September 2019.
