Despite his side’s 2-1 loss to MFM FC on Sunday in Matchday 34 of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), Enyimba International FC coach and former Super Eagles star, Finidi George says the focus and target for him as his side is a continental ticket.
“In Enyimba, the target is continental. Are you going to have it every year? You have to try it out. In football, sometimes you want to win and it doesn’t happen. We wanted to win. The next focus is to try to see how we can get good results from the remaining four games and fight for a continental ticket. If we don’t get it, we will try again next season.” He told pressmen after a 2-1 defeat to MFM FC at the Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
Victor Mbaoma’s 52nd-minute goal for Enyimba was cancelled by two goals from Oladayo Alabi (penalty) and David Nduka for MFM FC
“That’s football. When you don’t defend a goal well as we scored first, things like this will happen.” Finidi George continues. “Defensively, we did not get the job done which we could have done a better job. It’s so unfortunate. After a good start in the first half where we scored first, we couldn’t defend well. We still have four more matches and will fight till the end to see what happens as we can not throw in the towel. For the remaining four games that are left, we will give our best.
“When you don’t keep the ball, then you tend to defend a little bit more and that was what happened. Our opponents got that penalty. That penalty gave them a boost and came out stronger after that. We have to go back and see how we can win our home game. With two home and two away games left, let’s see what will happen.”
Enyimba International FC with 51 points from 34 games occupies the sixth position behind Rivers United, Plateau United, Remo Stars, Enugu Rangers, and Kwara United.
“Let’s wait till the end of the season. A lot can still happen between now and the end of the season. Let’s not speculate. Other teams might drop points while we capitalise on that. I will focus on the remaining games hoping that at the end of the season we can get the continental ticket. If it doesn’t happen, we will have to congratulate those that made it which is sportsmanship.” Says Finidi George.
Enyimba International FC is the first NPFL side that Finidi George will be coaching and the 2021/2022 NPFL season is his first as a coach in Nigeria.
He said: “Nigeria is my country. We always get it wrong when we come back here thinking that the league is not good enough. The league is good enough and there are a lot of things that we must improve on. The media know about it. It’s not for me to say. You have been watching games and can tell the good and bad things that needed to be worked on.”
The People’s Elephants will next face Heartland FC at home on June 26, 2022.
