The federal government of Nigeria has postponed the biggest sport gathering in the country, the National Sports Festival as a precautionary move against corona virus.
The news was made available by the minister of sports on his Twitter handle after a meeting with the minister of health and other experts.
The minister stated that the president of the country, General Muhammadu Buhari approved the postponement after speaking with the minister of health.
”Following the briefing of Mr. President from myself and the Minister of State for Health on COVID 19, Mr. President approved the immediate postponement of Edo Sports festival to a future date.” The sport minister said.
The sports festival was built to commence Sunday, 22nd March, 2020.
There have been calls for the event to be moved due to the pandemic of the corona virus as other sporting events have been called off in various part of the world.
Though the country is not among the worst hit countries, a fourth case of the virus has been reported and precautionary measures need to be in place to ensure safety of lives of the citizens.
Eleven thousand five hundred athletes are expected to be at the event that will be holding at the Sam Ogbemudia Stadium.
