Cotonsport of Garoua’s key midfielder Felix Oukine, 22, has tagged Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup confrontation against TP Mazembe on Sunday in Libumbashi as a game against a club that wants to prove it’s poweress in the competition.
Speaking during the regular pre-match conference this Saturday in Libumbashi, Oukine stated that the Central African derby has the possibility of defining their season and so the Ravens will come up strong.
“We face a team that wants to prove a point in the group. Play against Mazembe is an honor to us as these are two great clubs. We respect them and their ambitions, but tomorrow we will play to get a victory. By all means we will try to win to stay in the competition.”
The midfielder who skippered Cotonsport to the semi-final of last season’s competition was quick to wave suggestions it is a must win game to enhance the early exit of Mazembe and their chances of not only making it from the group but also of winning a continental title for the first time.
“No we are not thinking about eliminating Mazembe, all we be are thinking about not is to play per the instructions of the coach to maximize our chances of winning and staying in the competition,” Felix who has featured in the first two group games concluded.
Coton who reached the semi-final of last season’s competition are winless as a result of a goalless draw and a 1-1 draw against Al Masry and FC Otoho respectively.
The third group C fixture for both sides also represents a chance for hosts TP Mazembe to rediscover the winning sensation, having picked up a 1-0 win against Otoho in match-day One and suffered a 2-0 defeat in the hands of Al Masry in Egypt last weekend.
Coton must prevent a defeat in Lubumbashi to add points to their current tally of two points, just like Mazembe needs points to return to winning ways after a win-loss start.
Oukine and his Cotonsport colleagues arrived Lubumbashi on Friday and have taken to their base to finalize preparations.
TP Mazembe, 2016 and 2017 CAF Confederation Cup winners won 2-0 in Cotonsport’s last visit to Lubumbashi, it was during the 2008 season but they suffered a 0-1 defeat in the reversed fixture in Garoua. That season’s meeting was in the Champions League and the Cotonites finished runners-up to Al Ahly in the competition.
2pm of Sunday, February 27 at the Lubumbashi Stadium will mark the start of the spectacle.
