The recent-released competitions of the 2020-2021 Cameroon Elite One season has once again highlighted the Cameroon football federation’s desire to implement lasting reforms in the Cameroon Elite One and Two championships.
Over the years, many pundits and stakeholders have always pinpoint the number of Clubs in the top-flight Championship as part of the problems hindering the growth of football in the country.
Two seasons ago, the 18 Clubs that participated in the top-flight Championship were splitted into two pools to reduce cost amongst other reasons. This situation created a more competitive championship but unfortunately also created a situation where some Clubs didn’t face each other all season.
When the FECAFOOT-instituted Transitional Technical committee took over the management of the competition in the beginning of last season, one of their vision was to reduce the number of Clubs especially in the top-flight over time.
Unfortunately because of the pre-mature end to the 2019-2020 season, no Club was relegated.
As a reaction to this vis-a-vis their mission reduce the number of Clubs and better the competition as soon as possible, the Cameroon football federation has elected to relegate the seven least performant Clubs at the end of the upcoming season.
Per the rules of the competition published on Saturday, November 7, the upcoming championship will have 21 Clubs but at the end of the season, the competition will lose seven of its current members to the second tier Championship.
The number of Clubs to be promoted will certainly be defined in the yet to be released regulations of the second tier Championship.
This is obviously an indication that the current 15 Clubs Cameroon Elite Two championship will have more members next season and a step to the right direction.
