Istanbul FA has opened their Divisional League campaign in the best possible way after defeating Muyuka-based Al Jazeera SA. Leonard Ngeh scored the only goal of the game as IFAB won Al Jazeera 1-0.
The game counted for matchday one of the Fako Divisional League played at the Tiko Town Green Stadium this Sunday, April 4.
Both sides headed into this game after having a series of friendly encounters with teams in Buea, Tiko and Limbe. It was an opportunity for the two teams to reignite their ambitions of reaching the SW Regional League after the season was called off last year due to the coronavirus.
It was a closely fought first half as both sides gave it all they have. It was Al Jazeera who, however, was on the offensive in the opening minutes. Brandon Mbi, Victor Helman and Ndu Daniel all had meaningful opportunities to get the opening goal for Al Jazeera but the chances could not materialise.
Even though IFAB chose physicality in the first half as the team picked up some three yellow cards, they master up a couple of chances on their own. Bertivert Adeidong and Leonard Ngeh were the sparks for IFAB but their chances did not trouble goalkeeper Divine Anama.
With nothing to differentiate the two teams IFBA and Al Jazeera went into the break with a scoreline of 0-0. The break allowed both Coach Ache Ebenezar of IFAB and Forsah Eric of Al Jazeera to motivate their players knowing three points is up for grabs for anyone who could muster up a victory.
The second half began with a high intensity as IFAB took the game to Al Jazeera. IFAB had been slow in the first half but decided to shift gear in the second half with several opportunities in the opening minutes of the second half.
That pressure will bear fruits as at the 54mins IFAB took the lead. Leonard Ngeh scored the side’s opening goal to the jubilation of the fans and management of Istanbul FA.
Atubeh Thierry then had a glaring chance to extend IFAB’s lead but had his shot above the crossbar, to the disappointment of the Coach. Coach Ache Ebenezar seemed to have said something to his boys as their mindset, and ambition on the game shifted to that of victory.
Kenzo almost brought Al Jazeera back into the game with a powerful strike only for it to go wide of the post. Kenzo had been excellent in the second half. Like Keno, Henry Mukete had a great opportunity but after beaten the defenders his shot disappointedly went wide.
The victory for Istanbul FA gives them three points in Pool C with the other teams in the group expected to play in the coming days. Istanbul FA is alongside Babungo FA, Fako United FC, Botafogo AFC and ANADA in the group.
