Istanbul FA’s perfect run in the ongoing Fako Divisional League continues as they made it five wins from five games against Al Jazeera during matchday five of the championship on Saturday.
In a repeat of matchday one, it was a single goal from Leonard Ngeh that gave Istanbul FA the victory over Al Jazeera. This was the same score that was observed in the first game between the two sides played at the Tiko Town Green Stadium.
Al Jazeera was the better side a few minutes into the match as they took the game to Istanbul. Victor Helman seemingly had the better opportunities to give his side the lead but squandered most of the chances.
Helman had a freekick opportunity at the 12mins but his effort went wide from the goal post as Al Jazeera intensified their effort to take the lead. The defence of Istanbul was, however, up to the task of repelling the attacks.
Ignatius Ojong and Leonard Ngeh were the sparks for Istanbul with their work rate and the chances created. Ojong was excellent at the midfield supplying the ball to Leonard, who had limited opportunities in the first half due to a strong Al Jazeera defence as both sides headed into the break with nothing to show for.
Like in the first game, it was an all attack from Al Jazeera and a solid defence from Istanbul in the first half. But things will change in the second half as Istanbul intensified its effort to score the first goal.
The first meaningful opportunity in the second half will fall to Al Jazeera’s Ojong Ferdinand at the 58mins. The player lobbed the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper Elvis but the effort went just wide, to the disappointment of the Al Jazeera management. Should that ball had gone it Al Jazeera would have won the game looking at the pressure they had exerted on Istanbul.
The team will, however, leave to regret not taking their chances as Istanbul scored a beautiful goal at the 63mins. Leonard Ngeh went around goalkeeper Divine and calmly slotted the ball into the empty net – A goal that will prove vital in the encounter and the group as a whole.
Al Jazeera then pushed for an equalizer with Shu Kenfack coming close a few minutes but he scoffed his effort, as Istanbul looked to kill the game. Istanbul will be reduced to 10-men with their captain picking up a red card. Despite losing their captain, Istanbul held their nerves in check and went on to win the game 1-0.
In the other Group C game played at the BGS School Field, Fako United made it back-to-back wins against Babungo FA. The former defeated the latter 2 goals to 1. It should be noted that Fako United won Babungo FA in the first game of the first round.
Group C is being led by Istanbul FA with 15 points after five games played. The team has equally scored 10 goals, more than any other team in the group. The second spot is occupied by Al Jazeera SA with 9 points despite losing against IFAB. Fako United is third with 9 points, just goal difference separate Al Jazeera from Fako United. Babungo is fourth with 3 points while Botafogo AFC is bottom with no points recorded.
