75-year-old Egyptian Ezzeldin Bahader who is bidding to become the oldest professional footballer in the world, has scored on his debut.
The Egyptian is required to play two full games to qualify as an entry in the Guinness Book of Records.
He had a dream debut for Egyptian third tier team, October 6, on Saturday. He lasted the full 90 minutes, though he was carrying an injury.
October 6 recorded a 1-1 draw with Genuis and the 75-year-old father of four and grandfather of six got their goal from the penalty spot in the last minute of the game.
“I became the oldest professional footballer scoring a goal in an official game,” Bahader said after the game.
“This is something that was achieved in the last minute of the game that I thought I wouldn’t achieve. I was injured and all what I hoped for was to continue for the full 90 minutes and play the next game.”
If he features in their next game scheduled for March 21 and lasts the entire 90 minutes, then he will be officially recognized as the world’s oldest footballer by the Guinness World Records.
Israeli goalkeeper Isaak Hayik currently holds the record, after playing for Israeli low league side Yehuda last year, at the age of 73 years and 95 days.
Ezzeldin Bahader was an amateur footballer while exercising as a civil engineering consultant and later as a land cultivation expert.
The Egyptian FA announced the registration of septuagenarian in January, who had never played in any of the professional leagues.
Cairo-based October 6 enrolled him on their books after he had tried without success to join several other clubs. Their main goal could be to get international recognition as the club with the oldest professional footballer.
“It’s very good for Egypt to have someone in the Guinness Book of Records and for us to have him in October 6 club,” the club’s coach Ahmed Abdel Ghany said.
The determined 75-year-old doesn’t only train with his teammates, but has made other arrangements for home training sessions.
