Istanbul Football Academy of Buea claimed the AE Management pre-season trophy at the expense of Buea United despite looking second best in most parts of a game that went down to the wire at the Molyko Omnisport Stadium on Thursday.
Coach Emmanuel Agbor’s team took the lead at the 9th minute when Mbinglo Lartey Franklin ran past left-back Penda Blassius to play in a low cross which experienced central defender Mendy Kelvin attempted to clear but rather fumbled into his own net.
Istanbul FA did not take long to reply as they got their equalizer three minutes later. Midfielder Patrick Nguindjel made a trade mark surging run from midfield and threaded a fine ball to Takang Franklin who had only the goalkeeper to beat, but was heavily brought down by goalkeeper Jeter Shujongu Ewei. Referee Tanyi Shadrack pointed to the spot. The popular and reliable Clovis Ngalame stepped up and made no mistake.
Buea United thought they had restored their lead at the 22nd minute after Mbinglo Lartey again played through Mbua Oscar Ngembo who kept his cool and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Sako Emmanuel, but the goal was disallowed for an off-side call.
Buea United kept asking the right questions and almost took the lead at the 29th minute when Che Kingsley’s free-kick was headed inches wide by Ngembo.
At the 32nd minute Mbinglo Lartey again set up a good goal scoring chance for Amitt Renzo but he flopped his lines.
At the 40th minute Amitt Renzo failed to connect properly with Ngembo’s deviated header as the goalkeeper was beating but the ball went agonizingly wide.
In the second half coach Ebenezer Ache’s team had the first chance when first half substitute Elvis Nangeri who came in for a visibly disgruntled Abgor Marcel at the 37th minute, played through Ronald Ewonkem but he failed to get his feet right.
At the 57th minute Clovis Ngalame left right-back Smith Elondo of Buea United on the floor and squared the ball to Takang Franklin but the former Kumbo Strikers forward failed to head goalwards from close range.
Buea United then came back to life but failed to get the break-through despite the nice attempts from Ngembo, Amitt Renzo and Nomen Felix.
Buea United almost shot themselves on the leg with the last action of regular play time when Jimmy Djokam played the ball back to Ngolle Epoge who left it for his goalkeeper but the the surprise of all and sundry, he rather collected with the hands for an indirect free-kick in the box. Clovis Ngalame and Patrick Nguindjel combined to no meaningful effect.
The game was then decided through the unforgiving penalty shootouts, Jimmy Djokam, Smith Elondo, Nomen Felix and Amitt Renzo all scored for Buea United but Ayuk Valentine who attempted an audacious Panenka and Leonel Ayukegbe both failed to beat the goalkeeper and the three sticks.
For Istanbul FA Patrick Nguindjel, Mendy Kelvin, Yannick Akum, Ngalame Clovis and Kaba Collins all made sure while Mathieu Moki’s miss was of no consequence.
The coveted trophy was handed over to captain Yannick Akum of Buea United by the Secretary General of the South West Regional Bureau of Fecafoot Mr Sylvestre Mwambo Esowe to the delight of their belligerent supporters.
