Sunshine Queens of Akure, Ondo state narrowly missed out of 2018-2019 Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) Super 4 after ending the regular season with the same points alongside Bayelsa Queens. The club missed out of the tournament on goal difference.
The head coach of the side, Olanrewaju Wemimo Matthew opined that it was a painful experience notwithstanding, she is still proud of her players.

“So painful my brother, notwithstanding I am still very proud of my players. We were in a strong group, our group consist of the best three teams in the previous season, and got the same points with the team that topped the ground. Just two goals ahead of my team, kudos to the players and officials. Thanks to Almighty God.” She told kick442.com

The former coach of Ondo State Sports Festival team said that having more male coaches in the NWPL is a matter of personal interest as there are more male players than female players in football.
“I don’t think that anything is responsible for having few women coaches in Nigeria Women Premier League rather than personal interests. Just like the game itself, we have more Male playing football than female, so is interests.”

Looking ahead of next season, coach Wemimo Matthew speak on her target and what she wants to do differently from previous seasons.
“First, to beef up the team with some good players, mostly in the attacking role. Then, to intensify the team strategy, training for better performance. Like other coaches will say, I wish my team to be the champion this year by God’s grace. I wish to see myself and my team where Almighty God has ordained us to be.”
