There is a saying that getting to the top is easy but staying at the top is harder than getting there. That is the case with 2018-2019 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Champions, Rivers Angels as they hope to defend their title come Wednesday, March 18, 2020, when the 2019-2020 season kick off.
Rivers Angels forward, Ikechukwu Vivian is of the view that all clubs will want to defeat the defending Champions next season as no team is a push over hence the club need to work hard to replicate last season’s feat.
“Group B is a tough one because no team is a push over. As the defending champion, all teams will be looking forward to win us, so we don’t need to relax, we need to work harder to stay at the top. I feel so great that the excitements still evolve around us because being crown the league champion last season is a huge booster for us as a team and I am so grateful to God almighty for the victory last season hoping to win more trophies this season as well” Vivian disclosed to kick442.com
The former City of David Ladies and Abia Angels player said the crop of national team players playing for Rivers Angels helped her grow her career.
“They all helped me in my growing up in the game because of the love and oneness that is in the team. It is a great privilege to be part of this team
Rivers Angels where star players are…likes of Evelyn Nwabuoku, Cecilia Nku and many more.”
Ikechukwu Vivian also throw light into how she started her football career as well as parental support.
“I started at a very tender age, my brothers helped me to know the basics of the game while growing up before been discovered by a coach on a street football level. Initially my dad objected because I am a girl child, but my mom kept encouraging me and leading me on, then along the line my dad gave his full support. Although he is late now.”
From next season, clubs will now play fourteen (14) games, eight (8) games more than last season’s six (6) as the league rebrands itself from Nigeria Women Premier League to NWFL Premiership. Vivian shared her thoughts on this development.
“Every season the league is expanding and a lot have been introduced and I know alot more will still come because the league board are working hard endlessly to give us the best league and I know in due time we will have sponsors.”
“In the next five (5) years, I see myself playing at the Women world cup, champions league in Europe and signing a good contracts in Europe and be a good ambassador.” She concluded.
Rivers Angels will host FC Robo Queens in their Match Day one of 2019-2020 NWFL Premiership on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 with the hope of kick starting their title defence on a positive note.
