With the desire to welcome back fans in the stadiums for Euro 2020, the European football governing body has given until April 7 for host cities to present a clear scenario which includes fans presence and intends to decide at latest, April 19 during its annual executive congress fixed for Montreux.
On Sunday, UEFA’s chief Aleksander Ceferin told Sportske Novosti (Croatian paper) that the Euro competition scheduled for June 11 to July 11 had already been postponed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but will not be contested this year 2021 behind closed doors. While the Covid-19 variants prevents several forms of relaxation in Europe such a regrouping, it would require nailed biting measures from health experts in the old continent.
German organizers of Euro 2021 who are due to host four matches in Munich reacted sharply to the comments by saying “A withdrawal from Munich has never been and isn’t on the agenda”
“The German FA and the city of Munich will continue to work on different scenarios, with regards to possibly host spectators”
Football enthusiasts in Europe have deemed UEFA’s request “Ignorant and irresponsible” as Munich Mayor Dieter Rieter lamented this unilateral UEFA announcement: “I would like UEFA officials, especially at this time, to seek direct with contact with host cities in order to jointly find a solution” he said.
“As it stands,” the mayor continued, “it is simply impossible to say whether the level of infection from the pandemic will allow spectators to be admitted in June or not. But it is clear with the regulations in force, demonstrations of this nature with spectators are not authorized”.
