Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Andre Onana Onana was back between the sticks for his Dutch club Sunday, February 27, 2022 in what was his first start in the Eredivise in over a year.
Sunday’s game against Go ahead Eagles marked his first appearance in the league in 13 months with his last dating back to January 31,2021 due to a ban for violation of doping laws.
Though Onana didn’t process his usual clean sheet guarantee performance, his return on goal alone was a big positive.
The keeper already played for the club in a Champions League win against Besiktas but had to wait patiently for his chance in the League.
The league return ended up being a bitter sweet one as Eagles’ Iñigo Córdoba and Philippe Rommens beat in the first half while Ajax only replied once through Steven Berghuis.
The Match-Day 24 defeat is Ajax’s third this term but they stay top with 57 points obtained for registering 18 wins and three draws.
Ajax travels to AZ Alkmaar for the semi final of the Dutch cup on Thursday and it is unclear if Onana will keep his place in goal or 38-year old Remko Pasveer who has been first choice for most of this season will return.
His first League appearance for the season meant Onana has played three games in all competitions this season for the great Dutch club.
