Country giants Cotonsport of Garoua was eighth time lucky in Cameroon’s premier division on Sunday as they picked up their first Elite One, win in 2020 against Dragon FC on match day 25.
Marou Souibou illuminated the occasion with his team’s lone goal and sparked jubilant scenes at CAF Excellent stadium in Mbankomo.
Cotonsport of Garoua had gone over 720 minutes without recording a victory against a queue of opponents including ‘heart in mouth’ defeats to Panthere, Colombe and USD in the process.
The latest defeat against Union Sportif of Douala on match day 24 saw the Cotonsport fans turn their backs on management, the main reason why Emmanuel Bosso’s contract was terminated and Souleymanou Aboubakar appointed permanently as head coach.
To grace the victory even more, Cotonsport returned the one – nil scoreline favour Dragon FC inflicted on them on their patch. Dragon FC was the first team in the Championship to pick maximum points in Garoua before Panthere and Union further broke the Garoua jinx.
That victory increased Cotonsport’s points tally to 42, but they regain the top spot due to their superior goal difference. With the return of their key players from the intermediate Lions camp, the 15 times Elite 1 winners would hope they can line up a couple of victories starting with Fovu club during the midweek round of games.
