The president of Zamalek SC, Mortada Mansour has openly expressed his disapproval about the Egyptian government’s decision to resume elite football championship in the country.
Noted for his controversial outings, and positions, the firebrand football administrator has taken advantage of the airspace accorded him in a recent interview to put himself on the news again.
“We are not sheep. It is up to the presidents to decide,” these words summarize the opinion of Mr Mortada about government’s announcement of a resumption of training on June 20, 2020 in view of a continuation of the Egyptian Premier League.
Club Presidents in the North African nation have dissimilar views about the government’s move, but its Mortada’s that is on the headlines on the continent.
“With due respect; I am surprised by the Minister’s announcement. It is government intervention, which we don’t want. The Egyptian Premier League will not resume. 14 Clubs are against the restart. Crowning Al Ahly Champions will not be a problem to me. We will not go back to the pitch to please a few Clubs,” Mortada Mansour stated.
Football has gone dead in Egypt for the last three months, since the outbreak of the Corona virus pandemic. The Egyptian government is facing a real problem dealing with the pandemic, as justified by the death tool and number of infected persons.
The boss of another Premier League outfit Al Masry, Salir Halabeya subscribes to the opinion of his Zamalek colleague. He pays particular attention to the need to protect actors life.
“The lives of persons involved is more important than the resumption of football. Teams need three months to prepare for resumption, that’s why, I say we don’t have enough time to resume,” the president stated.
The Egyptian Minister of Sports, Ashraf Sohbi has tasked the country’s Football Federation to design an exact program for resumption of football competitions in the months ahead.
If Mansour’s position is anything to go by, then there is a need for a series of discussions with actors before scheduling a realistic resumption date, if football must resume.
So far, 18 of the 34 games have been played. Al Ahly well on course to win their 42nd domestic league title. They are 16 points ahead of second-placed Al Mokawloon.
So far, 49219 persons have been returned positive Corona Virus test results, resulting to 1850 fatality and 13141 recoveries.
