Two matches happened concurrently on two courts yesterday at the Emotan College, with Teams Edo and Kwara playing in the men’s category, while Teams Kaduna and Edo played in the women’s match.

Somehow, both matches got suspended after a fight broke out in the men’s game.

In the men’s game, Team Edo came from two sets down to level at 2-2 against Team Kwara, however in the deciding fifth set, Kwara went into an 8-4 lead and was in a good form to see it out. But Team Edo players started complaining about no longer having a clear vision since it was already 6.45 pm.

One of Team Edo’s coaches did not cover himself in glory, just when it looked as though the officials weren’t going to suspend the game, he incited some of his players, and was beckoning on the fans to throng to the court and disrupt the match. It took the intervention of his players to calm things.

Just when all these were happening in the men’s game, the women’s game had its fair share of drama. Team Edo led Team Kaduna 2-0, but the latter levelled at 2-2 and was leading 9-8 in the deciding set, until one player from
Team Edo got injured and could no longer continue.

After initial fears that the National Sports Festival will be halted today, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has issued a statement this morning that the games will go on as we expect more dramatic scenes from Benin City.
