Nigeria women basketball team, D’Tigress lost by a slim margin of just 5 points against world number 1- United States of America (USA) in their final match at Tokyo 2020 Qualifying Tournament on Sunday, February 9, 2020.
The game ended 76-71 against the world champions.
D’Tigress lead by a point at the end of first quarter by 21-20. Nigeria upped the tempo in the second quarter. The trio of Adaora, Victoria and Atonye combined well to help the team extend its lead by 9 points with scoreline
Nigeria 31-22 USA.
At half time, the D’Tigress lead by 14 points and doesn’t seem to step their feet off the gas.
Nigeria 40-26 USA.
Nigeria had a slow finish to end third quarter as the Americans reduced their deficit to within 7 points.
Nigeria 57-50 USA
It was a nerve last 5 minutes for Nigeria as D’tigress lost and regained the lead on two occasions after the USA cut back the previous 10 points deficit.
Nigeria 68-68 USA before losing 71-76.
The result was a huge improvement for the team under coach Otis Hughley.
At the last FIBA World Cup in Spain, D’Tigress lost to USA by 31 points (40-71).
Fast forward to 2020 D’Tigress at a point led with 16points before finally losing 71-76points in the dying minutes.
