Former Chelsea and Ivorian international forward Didier Drogba has joint efforts with one of Côte d’Ivoire’s biggest music group, ‘Magic System’ , to provide aid to thousands of poor families in Abidjan.
The African football legend and the popular music group’s efforts are part of their contributions in the fight against the deadly CoronaVirus pandemic.
The former Marseille forward and A’Salfo [Salif Traore, the Magic System leader], were part of the second phase of the “Caravan of solidarity against Covid-19”.
This initiative is financed by their respective foundations, a real estate company and the European Union.
“This is the time to show solidarity and compassion, to help the poorest in the population,” Drogba said.
“Not everyone can afford to stay confined for several weeks. The daily life of a young African is not the same as that of a young Frenchman,” Drogba added.
The initiative will provide soap, sanitizing gel, cooking oil, rice and sugar to 1000 families in 11 underprivileged areas of Abidjan over a period of 11 days, according to the organizers.
“Sharing values are important for artists. Culture can be at the service of the society,” Salif Traore said.
Didier Drogba had earlier on offered his hospital in Abidjan to serve as a Coronavirus screening facility.
In the first phase of the “Caravan of solidarity against Covid-19”, from April 2-9th, aid worth over 150 million FCFA was distributed to over 5000 families, organizers said.
