The Head coach of the Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo Christian Nsengi-Biembe is on thin ice after he failed to qualify the country for the Total 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.
This is the first time that DRC will not be participating at the AFCON in some thirteen years. The last time the country missed out was back in 2012 having missed out on the 2008 and 2010 editions. In the last edition in Egypt, the country finished on at the round of 16 (14th position).
The DRC failed to make it out of Group D that contained Gambia, Gabon, and Angola. It was a tough qualifier for the Leopards who were sure of not qualifying after being hammered by Gabon 3-0 on Thursday during matchday five. That victory gave Gabon 10 points while DRC had six points heading into the last group stage game.
The country, however, made sure they finished on a good footing by defeating Gambia 1-0 in their last game. In their six games played DRC succeeded in winning two games, three draws and one defeat. Gabo finished in the second position with 10 points.
Christian Nsengi-Biembe was appointed as Head coach of the Leopards in August 2019 succeeding Florent Ibenge. Before picking up the DRC Head Coach job, Nsengi-Biembe was coach of the DRC U-23 side from 2018 to 2019) and has coached AS Vita Club in 2017.
It is left to be seen if the Congolese Association Football Federation, FECOFA will move to part ways with the 58-year-old Nsengi-Biembe like other countries have done after failing to qualify for the AFCON.
South Africa and Togo are amongst the first countries to separate with their coaches. The South Africa Football Federation, Safa sacked Coach Molefi Ntseki while the Togo Football Federation, TFF, parted company with Claude Le Roy, all due to failure to qualify for the 2021 AFCON.
