One of the toughest matches played by Super Eagles en-route Tunisia 1994 African Cup of Nations, AFCON triumph was against Ivory Coast. President General, PG, Worldwide, Nigeria Football, and Other Sports Supporters Club, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, who led the club to cheer Super Eagles to victory at the tournament said that Ivorians planted four eggs on the pitch before the commencement of the match.
He discloses this during a live program on Lagos Television, LTV, which was followed by kick442.com
“When we got to the field, two hours before the match, I went to our stand and behold I saw four Ivorians on the field before the match and they were trying to bury something. I now said, this is unusual. I called on the camp commandant and went to the match commissioner. They came to the field and they uprooted four eggs.”
Dr. Ladipo also narrated how tough it was beating Ivory Coast at Tunisia 1994 as a result of their diabolic preparation before the game.
“When the match went on, it became very difficult for us to win. Even when Rashidi Yekini and his teammates will have the open net without a goalkeeper, they will shoot wide. I now called on my members to kneel down again. I told them that if you are a Muslim, bring out your rosaries. If you are a Christian, bring out your Bible, and we all started praying. You can still remember how difficult it was for us to defeat Ivory Coast. That is the aspect of prayers. The players did their own. We as members of the supporters club didn’t let them know because the moment you tell them, they will relax. Do your own on the field. Those of us who are supporters club members, have a role to play. At the end of the day, we defeated the Ivory Coast. We went on and on to win the cup.” He concluded.
Super Eagles went on to defeat Zambia 2-1 in the final and won their second African title in Tunisia as well as qualify for their first World Cup in USA 1994 where they reached the Round of 16 and were beaten 2-1 by Italy.
