The Cameroon economic capital Douala and the Moroccan capital of Rabat have been chosen to host this year’s CAF Champions League final and CAF Confederations Cup finals respectively.
For the first time the CAF club competitions finals will be played in a neutral venue and will be just one game.
In June 2019, CAF decided to have a one-game final in a neutral venue instead of two-legged finals played on a home and away basis for their two club competitions.
“The two cities got the nod following the evaluation of…key facilities such as infrastructures, accommodation (and) medical amongst others,” CAF said in a statement.
The CAF Champions League finals which is slated for May 29th 2020, might be postponed due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus. It will be played in the newly built Japoma Stadium in the outskirts of Douala.
The Confederations Cup final will be played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in the Moroccan capital of Rabat on the May 24th 2020.
Both the CAF Champions League and the Confederations Cup are at the level of the semifinals. The semifinals are scheduled to take place in May, but the Coronavirus outbreak has cast a major doubt on this schedule.
All the eight clubs still left in the competition hail from countries where Coronavirus cases have been reported.
Morocco’s Raja and Wydad of Casablanca as well as Egypt’s Zamalek and Al Ahly are the four teams involved in the champions League semifinals.
Meanwhile, Hassania Agadir and RS Berkane both from Morocco, Horoya from Guinea Conakry and FC Pyramids from Egypt are the four teams in the Confederations Cup last four.
The Moroccan football federation suspended all football activities in the country last Saturday “until further notice” as a measure to curb the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus.
The Confederation of African has taken some preventive measures already. One of such measures is the postponement of a handful of competitions last week, including qualifiers for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
However, nothing has filtered about a possible shift in the dates of the African club competitions.
