After two straight draws without conceding a goal against Edo Queens and Rivers Angels, Delta Queens suffered its first defeat and conceded its first goal at the 2022 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership.
Chimebere Opara scored the solitary goal for Nasarawa Amazons to edge Delta Queens 1-0.
Coach Tosan Blankson of Delta Queens after the game showed his surprise with the defeat despite losing two penalties and other goal-scoring chances.
“I am short of words. The girls can’t play this good and lost the match like this irrespective of the fact that we lost two penalties. We had great opportunities of scoring goals. I am still surprised.
“Sarah Nnodim who missed the first penalty was a former national team player and our best penalty taker. Today was a bad day in the office. Mercy Omokwu who missed the second penalty kick scored seven goals during the regular season. Good players came out to play the penalties but today wasn’t our day.” He concluded.
Meanwhile, Delta Queens goalkeeper and captain,
Onuegbu Ihuoma still believes that the team can still achieve something good before the end of the Super Six on Sunday.
She said: “I don’t know what to say. Thats the way the game came with hard luck. Penalties is a lucky part of the game. Any goalkeeper can concede at any time during the game. We will still raise ourselves up for the last two games. All hopes is still not lost. We will still push and work harder as well as correct our mistakes.”
With two points from three games, Delta Queens will face a daunting task against Bayelsa Queens on Friday at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, Edo State.
Bayelsa Queens seat at the top of the Super Six table with a maximum of nine points from three games.
