Officials of the Burundi Premier League have met and decided to carry on with the domestic football championship in the country despite the health threats presented by the CoronaVirus pandemic.
Officials of the championship met on Sunday April 5,2020 in Bujumbura with aims being to review match day 27 activities and the situation of the 16 clubs championship vis-a-vis Covid-19 with the three match days left.
At the end of Sunday’s conclave, football authorities settled on observing the three round of matches left despite the three cases of Covid-19 in the country.
The decision means Burundi is the only African country that will continue with it’s domestic championship. This is so at a time when the activities of the continental football body, CAF has been put on a hold.
However, Burundi football authorities have listed some preconditions for football to be played in the country.
They decided temperature checks will be conducted at the entrances of match venues, hands will be washed before matches and hugging is not allowed in the process of goal celebration. These are essentials for all on match venues in match day.
Therefore second-place Musongati will open match day 28 at home to LLB Academic. Five of the eight games for this match will be played on Saturday across the country while leaders Le Messager Ngozi will only be in action on Sunday. They host third-placed Dynamik with hopes of returning to winning ways after pulling a zero all tie against Vital’O in match-day 27.
There is certainly an a cloud of controversy, in a country going against the grain in turbulent times.
There are no signs that the Burundi Premier League will not follow the status quo anytime soon especially given the popularity their bullish display of normality is generating.
Tajikistan, Nicaragua and Belarus are the only other countries still practicing football in this troubled CoronaVirus times.
