The lead trainer of Cameroon Elite One Champions PWD Social Club of Bamenda has revealed his squad for Sunday’s CAF Champions League game against Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa will be thwarted as some players in his team lack administrative documents to be eligible for their competition debut.
Speaking in a recent interview with the Club’s management team, Pagou revealed that beyond the failure to have League games under their belt before the start of the prestigious competition, they are also dealing with absences for reasons out of their control.
“As at now, we are quite motivated. Facing Kaizer Chiefs motivates us. Our team is ready, we have the complete elements to take into this game except for the fact that some of our key players don’t have passports and we are going into the game without a competitive game under our belts, but we are ready,” coach Pagou revealed.
The gaffer however failed to reveal the identity of the players faced with this situation but kick442.com understands the Abakwa boys will be missing a key defender and a midfielder for this reason.
The trainer however assured that the team has all it entails to make themselves and the fans proud on Champions League debut on Sunday.
“We are going to approach the game as usual, we are going to begin our season with this important game, so we continue to prepare our team. The guys are very motivated,” Pagou concluded.
The Abakwa boys only returned to the country late last week after spending just under a week in the Libyan city of Tripoli where they played two friendly games and returned unbeaten with one win.
In what will be the first fixture between both sides, the game at the Omnisport Stadium in Limbe, is the first of a two-legged set of preliminary fixtures, with the second game taking place next week Friday at the FNB Stadium in South Africa.
Sunday’s game will be the PWD’s first appearance in the CAF Interclub competitions in 16 years while Chiefs end a four-year absence and it is a first meeting with Kaizer Chiefs.
Both sides see the fixture as the first step towards the elusive CAF Champions League group stage.
The winner of this round will face Angolan side Primero De Agosto over two legs in the first round and the winner of that clash will move onto the group stages with 15 other teams.
