Cotonsport legend Kamilou Daouda has paid tribute to his club after they won the MTN Elite One title in a dramatic fashion on Sunday at the Roumde Adjia Stadium.
Gabriel Hamann’s team came from a goal down to turn a 1-0 deficit against Eding Sport into a 3-2 victory on post-match penalties after both sides had seperated 1-1 after 120 minutes.
Kaiba Djawal scored the equalizer in added time to send the game into extra time after which Anye Derick was magical in the shoot outs.
It was Kamilou who assisted the Kaiba goal in stoppage time, coming off the bench to ensure he helps Coton win their 17th title, eight of which he has been part of.
“It has been a wonderful season, we have come a long way. Congratulations to the entire squad,” Kamilou explained.
Coton boss Hamann said his players had shown their mental strength after the victory.
“We showed character and have come a long way this season. We will be remembered. This group of players have done well,” said Gabriel Hamann stated.
“What we achieved, it is so difficult to do it. We came from from last to first. It was a wonderful season. The fans, players, staff, the board and contributed alot to take us here today. I dedicate this to our former coach and technical director with whom we started this project,” Sporting Director Adamou Saliou said in his post-match interview.
“Winning at home in front of our people is the best. The moment we equalised, we had the feeling we had the chance to win.
“It was the best atmosphere I have ever lived since I am here. This group of players showed character. Thats how we got here,”Kamilou concluded.
Cotonsport’s victory means the club will compete in the preliminary rounds of next season’s
CAF Champions League as Cameroon’s lone representative.
The 17 times winners of the Cameroon topflight title will return to the CAF Champions League scene for the first time since 2018 with hopes of getting to the business end.
