Falconets duo of Joy Jerry and Deborah Abiodun says the team is well prepared ahead of the Costa Rica 2022 FIFA Women’s World Cup third round Qualifiers against Congo this weekend.
“We are prepared and ready with our training and have worked hard as well as a lot of interactive sessions to develop us ahead of the game. We are prepared to win Congo and bring them down. Football is a 90 minutes game. The only thing you can do for your team converts your chances. As a player, you have to take any opportunity that you are given. Congo are not just leftovers. We know that by God’s grace, they will go down.
“Congo is just an obstacle that we just have to bring down so that we can qualify to the next stage. Probably, they will go down. That is the confidence I have that we can do it. Nigerians are looking up to us with high hopes because, in this category, there has not been any sort of disgrace to the nation. We will not disgrace Nigerians. By God’s grace, we will qualify and do well.” Says Bayelsa Queens player, Joy Jerry.
Falconets defeated the Central Africa Republic 11-0 on aggregate in the second round of the Qualifiers and Rivers Angels’ Deborah Abiodun opined that the team will try to utilise their chances to score more goals against Congo in the away leg of the fixture.
She said: “Going to Congo is to put in our best and bring out what the coaches have impacted into us. To make the country, our coaches, ourselves, and families proud because they have done great works by imparting knowledge into us in several ways. It’s an opportunity for us all to make Nigerians proud and win well. We want to go there and play with everything we have just to make Nigerians proud.
“Our coaches taught us to always utilise our chances. If we have more goals, I don’t think there is a limit to the number of goals that we are expecting. Nevertheless, we are expecting a high scoreline to be able to stand our ground and regain ourselves. We intend to win and win well against Congo.”
Falconets remain the best African team at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after two silver medals in previous editions.
Nigeria will attempt to pick one of the two tickets up for grabs from Africa Qualifiers.
