Mozambique started their campaign of the COSAFA under twenty championship with a win over Lesotho on Thursday at Wolfson stadium.
The group A opener ended by a goal to nil through an early goal by Simon Ciprano of Mozambique.
An early goal in the 9th minutes gave an impression of a bumper game, but it was rather an anticlimactic feeling as much of the tie failed to produce much scoring chances.
With seven chances created by Mozambique (2 on target) and Lesotho’s three (1 target), there seemed not much was going to change the complexion of the game. A better Mozambique edged it at the end.
In the other game of the day, Amajita of South Africa came back to take a point against rivals Zimbabwe in the second group A match.
Panashe Mutimbanyoka’s header set the ball rolling scoring as early as the ninth minutes to give Zimbabwe the lead.
South Africa drew level in the early minutes of the second half through Oswin Appollis to the delight of the host.
Zimbabwe however restored lead later in the second half despite dominance just like the first half through another corner. Lexington Mujokoro made it 2-1.
But Zimbabwe was not going to have the last laugh as South Africa’s captain Mohlala Makola put the ball at the back of the net at injury time after a freekick was not cleared in the box 18 by the Zimbabweans to end at it two all.
Tomorrow’s fixtures will see Defending Champions, Zambia play Namibia while Comoros Island will host Malawi.
