At a time that some people still stay in denial over the reality and devastating effects of the deadly Covid-19 virus, Mamelodi Sundowns captain and Bafana Bafana international Mlompho Kekana has added his voice to those of other icons of the continent to call on more vigilance and protection over the pandemic.
Kekana joins the likes of Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba and Joseph Yobo who have spoken out against the deadly virus.
Former Nigerian international midfielder John Obi Mikel even had to leave Turkish Super Lig leaders Trabzonspor on mutual consent in protest on how the Turkish FA was responding to the outbreak.
34-year-old Kekana has made a clarion call on South Africans to respect the rules like hand hygiene in order to curb and alleviate the spread of the virus.
“The virus is real, lets not be naive and act as if we don’t see,” Kekana told Goal.
“The message is clear, let’s wash our hands at least four times a day and don’t forget to stay at home.
“Let’s follow these simple rules and safe lives.”
The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called for the suspension of all sporting activities in the country following the Coronavirus outbreak, with the country currently counting more than 900 cases, the most in any country on the African continent.
Kekana believes it was a very wise call for the safety of sports men and their families.
“Actually, it’s good that we took a break,” the six times South African Premier League winner said.
“Remember we are also human, and our families are in danger if we catch the virus, and also those who are close to our families, at work, at school.
“So more than anything we run more danger to society more than anybody else. Lots of traveling in different airports, so it was wise to stop till this gets sorted out.”
South Africa had a national lockdown declared from Thursday night, the sports men including PSL players are expected to be released to go home and be with their families.
