kick442.com has exclusively gathered that the video assistant Referee, VAR technology could have made it’s first appearance in Cameroon on the 25th of this month if not for the outbreak of the CoronaVirus.
Our findings have it that the technology which is already in place at the newlook Japoma Stadium could have been tested in the match-day 30 Cameroon Elite One fixtures pitting leaders PWD social club and relegation Avion Academy of the Littoral region if not for the postponement of the Cameroon Elite One championship.
The game could have been the first official game in the newly constructed fifty thousand seater stadium.
Cameroon’s league one and two championships under the guidance of a league management body mandated by country’s football federation were called off earlier this week. This decision halt the championships is part of measures to combat the Convid-19.
We understand football officials in Cameroon and the Confederation of African Football had picked March 25th and the above-mentioned fixtures to test the technology. Uncertainty sorrounds the fixture that will be picked for the event whenever the leagues resumes.
VAR is expected to be used on May 29th during the 2019-2020 historic single-game CAF Champions league final at the same venue.
We understand Japoma is will be the center for the technology in upcoming competitions in need the technology in Cameroon, amongst which is the postponed 2020 African Nations Championships and the 2021 African cup of Nations.
The Cameroon Transitional Technical Committee in charge of the local championship hasn’t pronounced a possible resumption date for it’s competition and it is unclear if the same game will benefit from the first use of the technology in the country.
Cameroon is gifted with a team of referees [led by Alioum Neant Sidi] who are comfortable users of the technology having tried their hands on it in different competitions including the 2019 AFCON tournament in Egypt.
Should the technology be used in a league game in the days ahead, the Cameroon Elite One championship will become the second local championship on the continent to use the technology following the steps of the Botola Pro League of Morocco.
