The 20th of January, 2018 would be great remembered as a “dark Sunday” in the nation’s club football.A journey that began with four teams: Eding Sport FC, New Stars, Union Mouvements Sportive of Loum, and Cotonsport of Garoua promised to be an adventure of unbridled joy, for soccer fans.
Eding sport FC was disqualified due to delays beyond CAF’S control. That left the nation with just 3 representatives, 2 in the CAF African champions league and one in the CAF confederations cup.
New Stars coming into the tournament was as a result of the horrendous happenings at the ranks of Bamboutos of Mbouda, and they had quiet a run; scoring 6 goals in the tournament, 5 of those courtesy an “inhumane” Junior Figo Ngongang. New stars lost 1 game against Gor Mahia in Kenya, after beating O’vitalo club and pulling a one-all tie against Al Ahly Tripoli.
In all New Stars played 6 Confederation cup games;Won 1 drew 4 and lost 1.The club scored 6 goals and conceeded 5.
New Stars kept 3 clean sheets all at home and also failed to score at home.
Union Mouvements Sportive of Loum had the shortest stint of all Camerooonian clubs that we’re in the Continental jamboree. A one goal to nothing meant advantage (UMS), until Lobi Stars at home happened. The winners of the Nigerian premier League found the heart and character on their home patch to see UMS of Loum slipping down the slippery slope. The game ended 2-0 for Lobi, and they progressed.
2 games for UMS;1 win and 1 defeat. 1 clean sheet in 2 games.
Cotonsport over the years have been the last resort for football darlings in the nation. The Garoua based club started their campaign as the holders of the MTN Elite 1, thus automatically getting that coveted CAF African champions league spot. Coton made a mess of a start against a little known Bobo Dioulaso outfit of Burkina Faso loosing 3-1, only to correct their wrongs with a similar 3-1 win in Yaounde, and managing to get through to the next round of the CAF African champions league on post match penalties. North African counterparts have always been a huge pain in the skin, testament to this fact is Ismaily’s 2-0 win in Egypt, and a lovely game management as they succeeded and scored in Cameroon. Though Coton attempted walking on Waters by scoring two at home, Ismaily scored that solitary goal to take them on to the next level of the jamboree.Coton dropped to the CAF confederations cup and ran into a truck personified by Asante Kotoko of Kumasi,Ghana.
The game in Yaounde ended 3-2 for Kotoko, while in the return fixture saw Asante leapfrogging Coton sport 2-1.
6 games played for Cotonsport in the CAF Champions league and Confederation cup,2 wins and 4 defeats.
The club scored 9 goals and conceeded 12 goals.
Kamilou Daouda got 4 of the goals for Cotonsport.
They failed to keep a clean sheet in all 6 games.
It is pretty much done for all the clubs that represented the green, red and yellow flag of Cameroon. There is always a next season to try, but what is the root course for the ridiculous performances of these clubs? The Cameroon league commences on the 26th, and these clubs would have to get up and fight again.
Asante Kotoko thus eliminated the last two Champions of Cameroon in Eding Sport FC and Cotonsport of Garoua while the Current champion of Kenya in gor Mahia eliminated New Stars and that of Nigeria,Lobi Stars Eliminated UMS of Loum.If this is not trouble in the life of Cameroon football then it must be something related to trouble.
