Nigeria’s former international, Chinedu Obasi Ogbuke has revealed that he was asked ”to pay some money” to be in the 2014 Nigeria Super Eagles world cup team.
The former Schalke 04 player spoke with Nigerian journalist, Kelechi Bernard in an Instagram live chat.
The player narrated that ”two days before the list came out he (I) was asked to pay some money if he (I) want to be in the team.”
”I felt like I have paid my dues for the country. It was a bit personal and very heartbreaking because I got injured.” The former Hoffenheim player said.
Obasi also recounted when he was injured playing for Nigeria and how the country neglected him prior to that World Cup.

”I got injured in 2010 World Cup playing for Nigeria. After that, nobody called me, nobody contacted me to know how I was doing. I spent so much to make sure that I got myself fit.”
The 33-year old striker was of the opinion that he should have made the team on merit since he was at Schalke 04; a club that was among the top teams in Europe at that time.
”I feel like if you have to represent a country you have to take the best. I feel like at that time if you name two or three players that played in a top flight football, Schalke 04 was among the team that is a top club in Europe at the time.”
Obasi had played for Nigeria from 2005 to 2011 scoring seven goals in thirty four appearances.
He moved to AIK in Allsvenskan in 2019 in his second spell after playing for the club in 2015.
