The lead trainer of the Intermediate Uganda Cranes coach Johnathan McKinstry has told the media his side stays in the competition despite their defeat against surprised defeat to debutants Togo this Friday evening.
Togo stunned the Cranes with by handing them a 2-1 defeat in their second group game which turned out to be a showcase of African Football.
The defeat leaves Uganda with a point from two games ahead of their all-important group decider against Morocco on Tuesday.
McKinstry expressed his satisfaction about his side’s performance during the post-match press conference though the Cranes failed to get the expected outcome.
“We are not out of the competition[laughs]. If we beat Morocco we will qualify to the quarter-finals. It is very black and white. My players very well today, we created lots of chances, Togo cause a lot of problems. We came out in the second-half, an own goal, but! We know this is not in the highlights but we will like to see what we believe was a free-kick for our center back before the corner was awarded,” McKinstry stated.
Uganda played the best football in the night but lacked the killer instinct to punish their starved opponents throughout the night. They appeared to be a fool in the build up to Togo’s first goal but the referee Gatogato hesitantly validated the goal with the team having all eyes on him.
Coach Johnathan McKinstry revealed his team improved from the Pre-CHAN invitational Tournament and the first game but hitting the target was lacking.
“Our performance today, the only thing that was lacking was hitting the target more often. The interplay in the second-half the intensity was well advanced from what we saw in the Pre-CHAN tournament, unfortunately we didn’t do that often enough today.” McKinstry continued.
The coach reiterated that he were disappointed with the result just like 40 millions Ugandan back home but they are keen on beating Morocco to achieve the quarter-final qualification goal set from the start.
