The Coach of the Ugandan selection taking part in the Africa Nations Champion Jonathan McKinstry is confident of his teams preparations for their first game in the competition. Uganda is scheduled to face Rwanda in a regional derby on 18 January in the second game in Group C.
“We feel we know where their strengths are and we are making sure we cover up for those in the last few training sessions. It is really not about doing anything new but about focusing on one or two specific areas of our style of play that will bring maximum benefit,” Coach Jonathan McKinstry said.
It is a big derby to start the tournament with as Rwanda and Uganda are big rivals. To the Jonathan McKinstry it is important for his players to know it is not about three points in the tournament but local bragging right in the region. It is also the first time the coach is coming up against Rwanda.
“I had a lot at the squad and 18 of the players played for me a couple of years ago. It is a very experience squad and hopefully my knowledge of the squad can get the result everyone at home and here are desperate for,” Coach Jonathan McKinstry added.
“We are continuing to climb the mountain we have set for ourselves as we know if we reach the top of the climb we can be successful. Going into the games we believe we have the qualities and our focus should be seventy per cent on us and thirty per cent on the opposition. That is not to demean or lower the quality of the opposition but we feel we have the style of play, quality of players to cause our opponents problems.”
It should be noted that Uganda is in Group C alongside Rwanda, Togo and defending champions Morocco. Uganda will be making its fifth participation in Cameroon. The team has never gone past the group stage in all their four participations (2011, 2014, 2016 and 2018), something which Jonathan McKinstry hopes to correct in Cameroon.
