Uganda Cranes Head coach Johnathan McKinstry is considering the last group stage game against the local Atlas Lions of Morocco as a cup final.
During a pre-match press conference coach McKinstry acknowledged the quality of Moroccan team, highlighting his side is also prepared for the task.
“There is no next game at the moment, this is the cup final. We are now into the last 48 hours before we play Morocco, really we are looking to foster that cup final mentality. The boys after they have worked hard today, we were really pleased, with the performance against Togo eventhough we were disappointed with the results and in many ways we are looking for a lot of aspects from the game. But we need to go out, there will be a couple of new things because Morocco presented a different challenge.”
“We believe we have players that can hold Morocco though challenging. We have to have a 90minute performance. Rwanda too made mistakes and the Moroccan team had the power and quality to polish those mistake. So for us it is about having fully energetic performance. Yes we know we need to win if we go out on full attack for 90minute but Morocco has the quality to punish us on counter attacks. We are ready and it is going to be an impressive game.” Jonathan McKinstry added
In order to achieve this objective, Ugandans have been encouraged to give in their all for a ticket to the quarter finals. This means eventually defeating Morocco despite their quality
“What we are saying to the players is, do not worry about any tomorrow. Just worry about this game. Put all your energy, just with great efforts, intelligence and vitality ,and if you do that there is a really big price for you then we could put you back together and do everything that is required to put you in order for the quarter finals back. There is no quarter finals without the results on Tuesday night. So we beleif we can do it, we want to write the story for our country, ourselves. We have to work and put everything we have got in to it.”
Coach McKinstry and boys will face top place Morocco at 8:00pm Tuesday January 26, 2021, at the Reunification Stadium in Douala.
Uganda currently has one point from a 0#0 draw against Rwanda. They suffered a 2#1 defeat from the Sparrowhawks of Togo on day two.
