As the African Nations Championship (CHAN) sets to kick start on Saturday in Cameroon, kick442.com gives you all need you about the modalities in place as it pertains to a tournament of this magnitude.
With teams increase from eight to sixteen, this year’s competition holds much expectations and should be great watching teams play at four (4) different stadia – Amadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaoundé, Bepanda Stadium in Douala, new Stadium in Japoma in Limbe and the Omniport Stadium.
In group A, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Mali and Zimbabwe go head to head for qualification in the group stage. Group B houses former winners Libya and Dr. Congo including Congo and Niger.
Defending Morocco have their work cut out against Togo, Rwanda and Uganda in group C while Zambia, Guinea, Namibia and Tanzania slug it out in group D.
Interestingly, one of these countries will be carting away with the increased sum of US$1.25 million at the end of the tournament. It was previously $700,000 which is now the price money for this year’s runners up. Third and fourth place teams take $400,000 and $300,000 respectively.
Expectedly, modalities are in place to checkmate the spread of the global pandemic, coronavirus. Apart from the test conducted at arrivals, players will be tested 48 hours to games. The teams however have the luxury to choose any of the ten players on the waiting list to replace another player in the instance of a positive case.
25 percent of the capacity of the stadiums will be allowed for group stage matches while an increase will be allowed if guidelines are strictly followed by the spectators. There will be opportunity for fans who couldn’t make to the stadium to watch large screens outside.
With regard to security, authorities have assured football lovers of utmost security through out the duration of the tournament.
