Current Togolese gaffer of French nationality and one of the continent’s heavyweight’s as per the ‘mind games,’ Claude Leroy, aired earlier this week on popular French television CANAL + SPORT that he stands for an African Nations Championship in June.
Heartache of the aftermath left after Cameroon was stripped of her hosting rights was only beginning to heal with the awarding of several juggernaut competitions, but now, it seems a dagger is drawing ever so close to opening up a nearly forgotten scare in the land of the Lions.
Cameroon was on course to hosting the sixth edition of the African Nations Championship from April 4-25 – but the Covid-19, a global pandemic, has shown up and completely turned on the furniture.
CAF President Ahmad Ahmad has not for once been a fan of international competitions being played in really wet conditions, and as such has played down the months of June and July, as being an option of which the competition could be carried forth to.
“I am in support of the CHAN to be played in June. When I lived in Cameroon, the national championship took place during this period in good conditions. There are many countries in the world where we play when it rains. Anyway, the competition must take place in Cameroon. We stop foiling them,”
Claude Leroy said on CANAL + SPORT.
Claude Leroy, 72, is a hall of famer in the African game to corroborate the assertion is a queue of honours including the “Humane order of African redemption” handed the Frenchman by incumbent Liberia President George Weah on August 24, 2018.
Claude Leroy has had two successful spells in the past with the indomitable Lions of Cameroon and recently made a public revelation of his cravings to coach the team once more, if he is handed the chance.
Leroy leaks his lips whenever there is a discussion of Cameroon mainly due to the fact that it was Cameroon he landed on, when he came to Africa back in 1985. He went on to win the AFCON 1988 and later made a comeback (1998) in the Lions’ den which lasted one year.
As a spare of thought for President Ahmad, the football calender is utterly choked up and the only alternative could be June and July, as the competition cannot be carried to 2021 due to multiple tournaments like the AFCON for both men and women’s categories on suspense.
