Ahead of the African Nation Championship, CHAN scheduled to be hosted in Cameroon from the month of January to February 2021; Prime Minister Head of Government Dion Ngute has appreciated the quality of infrastructure at the nation’s political capital Yaounde.
The Minister was speaking after making a visit to the sporting infrastructures that will host matches in Yaounde. The PM hinted that there could be massive turnout for the various matches, while also calling on Cameroonians to turn out massively during the African Nations Championship, CHAN.
The CHAN which is a competition reserved for home-based players will take place from January 16 to February 7, 2021.
Host Cameroon will look to improve on their performances of the CHAN. The country has had four participations in the competition, with their best performances being a run to the Quarter finals in 2011, and 2016. Morocco are the defending champions, having won the competition in 2018 on home soil.
Coach Ndtoungou Mpile will be at the dugout for the CHAN Lions next year. This comes after the sacking of Yves Clement Arroga in October of this year. Â Â Â
The CHAN that was to take place in 2020 was postponed to 2021 due to the ongoing health pandemic in the world. Cameroon will open the competition on January 16 against Zimbabwe. This will be followed by Mali against Burkina Faso.
16 teams are involved in the competition drawn into four groups. Â Matches will be held in four venues at three cities of Yaounde, Limbe and Douala. Group D matches will be played in Limbe.
Group A: Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Zimbabwe
Group B: Libya, DR Congo, Congo and Niger
Group C: Morocco, Rwanda, Uganda, and Togo
Group D: Zambia, Guinea, Namibia, and Tanzania
It should be recalled that Tunisia who qualified for the CHAN but with draw from the competition in January 2020. Libya, who Tunisia eliminated were invited to take part in the competition which they accepted. Tunisia has thus been banned from taking part in the next edition of the CHAN.
