One of the most interesting opening group games will be that of DR Congo vs Congo. Both sides will urge one another on the green turf Sunday January 17, 2021 at the Japoma Multipurpose Sports Complex in Douala.

The clash of neighbours entails a lot considering Congo will want to safeguard more points to sail through to the next round meanwhile DR Congo with highest number of trophies recorded in the CHAN will be looking forward to making amends for absence in the 2018 Morocco CHAN edition and to grab a third trophy.

What to Note

Arrival

Both sides DR Congo being the most successful team in the CHAN and headlines group C as well as Congo all made their way in to Cameroon Thursday January 14, 2021, via the Douala International Airport. A region where both sides will be seeking for better days in the CHAN.

Qualification

Coach Florent Ibenge and his boys of DR Congo booked a slot in this year’s showpiece to Cameroon after a triumphant 4-1 victory at home Sunday in Kinshasa against the Central African Republic to go through 6-1 on aggregate.
Their 3-1 victory at home in the first leg has proved enough to sail them through to the competition for the 4th time.

Congo qualified for the Africa Nations Championship at the expense of Equatorial Guinea. The game ended on an aggregate scoreline of 2-2 after Equatorial Guinea won the first encounter by 2 goals to 1, and Congo beat Equatorial Guinea 1 goal to 0 in the second leg. Congo qualified on the away goal rule to continue their aspirations of winning the CHAN title.

Trophies

DR Congo were the champions of the inaugural edition of the CHAN in 2009. They won the CHAN first in Ivory coast and later in 2016 hosted by Rwanda.
They remain the only team to win CHAN title twice, in 2009 and 2016.

On the other hand, the Leopards of Congo are yet to drink from this prestigious trophy. Congo Brazzaville is making her third participation in the CHAN. Her best performance remains at the level of the quarter finals which was in Morocco 2018.

DR Congo has one of the best coaches in the tournament in person of Coach Florent Ibenge, AS Vita’s boss. He has had mastery of the tournament and will want to continue proving himself

Congo Republich will take on Niger Republic Thursday 21st January 2021 before playing their last group game against Libya on Monday 25th January, 2021.
