In all its four participation at the Africa Cup of Nations Championship, CHAN the Warriors of Zimbabwe have never won their opening game in the competition. The team will hope to do justice and overturn the winless opening game “curse” when they face the intermediate lions of Cameroon this Saturday January 16.
The warriors of Zimbabwe have intensified their preparations for the game having had a series of training sessions since they touched down in Yaounde.
Participating in 2009 the warriors of Zimbabwe had a 2-2 draw with the Ghanaian counterparts. This was followed by a 1-0 loss to Niger in 2011. Zimbabwe then had a 0-0 draw with Morocco in 2014 and a 1-0 loss to Zambia in 2016. The team did not participate at last year’s edition of the competition.
The Zimbabwean team has selected a squad of 23 players. Tawanda Nyamandwe who tested positive for COVID-19 has been replaced by Thomas Chideu.
Zimbabwe will play the opening game of the CHAN against host Cameroon on January 16 at 5 pm local time. Zimbabwe is in Group A alongside host Cameroon, Mali and Burkina Faso.
Zimbabwe gets things off in the opening game on 16 January at 5 pm. The country will be in action on day two against Burkina Faso (20 January at 8 pm). The last game for Zimbabwe is against Mali (24 January at 8 pm).
The Warriors of Zimbabwe will be making their fifth appearance in the tournament having missed out in 2018. The team’s best performance this far is a semi-finalist at the 2016 edition.
