The Deputy Secretary-General of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Anthony Baffoe says he is very impressed with the level at which Cameroonians took to the Africa Nations Championship and the turnout at the various games.
“Truly spectacular! With only 25% of the stadium capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had more spectators than the last CAN. Cameroonians live football, love football, know football and play football,” Anthony Baffoe said as quoted by CFOOT
“You cannot imagine what the atmosphere would have been like in the stadiums if it weren’t for this pandemic. This is why we hope that we will find the miracle cure quickly to allow us to have a good atmosphere for the AFCON.”
In all the games played so far in the competition, there have been a huge following and support shown to the teams by the various fans. The Chipolopolo of Zambia, the Syli National of Guinea, the Intermediate Lions have all pull out huge support which often sees the stadiums jam-packed.
Due to the COVID-19, the number of fans had to be limited to just 25% capacity. There had been hopes that the semi-finals and final will see the number increased as CAF had earlier stipulated that for the semi-finals and final the capacity will be increased to 50%.
However, that was not the case as CAF in a release maintained the 25% quota of fans for both semi-finals and the final.
The Africa Nations Championship concludes this February 7 as defending champions Morocco faces off against Mali at the Ahmadou Ahudjo Stadium. For the third-place match, it comes up February 6 with the Intermediate Lions of Cameroon to face Guinea at the Reunification Stadium in Douala.
