29-year-old Indomitable Lions striker Vincent Aboubakar has already surpassed and bettered his goal scoring record at the two previous AFCON – his 2 goals against Burkina Faso meant he is one better than his AFCON 2017 tally of just 1.
And there is one record that the former Coton Sport FC of Garoua player will be eyeing when he takes to the pitch today against Ethiopia at the Olembe Stadium – scoring in consecutive games for his country.
Since Samuel Eto’o did it in January 2008 (five in total), no player has scored in three consecutive games in the tournament for the Indomitable Lions – a feat Aboubakar will look to achieve.
The Indomitable Lions are the favourite heading into this game against Ethiopia with the last meeting between both sides ended in favour of Cameroon.
Cameroon and Ethiopia have faced each other just once at the AFCON, coming back in 1970 with a 3-2 victory for Cameroon.
Coach Antonio Conceicao will hope his boys continue their winning streak which will not only see the side qualify for the knockout phase but in the process acquire another record.
For 15 years, the Indomitable Lions have not won two successive games at the AFCON with their last two successes being at the 2006 AFCON where they won Angola 3-1 and followed that with a 2-0 victory against Togo.
It was not plain sealing for Ethiopia in the first game as the side lost to Cape Verde 1-0. That defeat brought an unwanted record for Ethiopia as they are now winless in their last 9 AFCON matches picking up three draws and six defeats. It is also the longest run of any team involved in this year’s competition.
