The new technical staff of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon already have something to worry about as uncertainty looms over Andre Onana’s availability for Cameroon when they take on the Desert Foxes of Algeria in the FIFA World Cup play-offs double-header later this month.
According to reports from the Netherlands, the Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper picked up a calf problem in their 1-2 defeat in the domestic league game against Go Ahead Eagles last Sunday.
Onana is expected to undergo medical examination this Tuesday in Amsterdam to determine the gravity of the injury, a process that the Cameroon national team staff led by Rigobert Song will take interest in the results.
Onana has featured thrice for Ajax this term and was just about returning between the sticks in the past few weeks after serving a nine months ban for violation of anti-doping norms.
Onana has been Cameroon’s first choice keeper whenever he has been available in the past two years.
While waiting for results of the medication examinations history of such injuries shows it takes between 2-3 weeks for a footballer to recover from such a problem. If past evidence is anything to go by, Onana will recover in time for the first-leg game at the Japoma Omnisport Stadium on March 25 and the return game in Blida four days later.
In the absence of 27-capped Onana, Devis Epassy or Simon Omossola represent good options when need be.
Just like Ajax, Cameroon needs Andre Onana at his best these days given the challenges ahead.
Onana’s International colleague, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa of Napoli is also out recovering from a muscle injury.
