2007 CAF Champions League winners, Etoile du Sahel settled for a barren draw after ninety minutes against CR Belouizdad in their CAF Champions League group stage match on Friday.
The ten times winner of the Tunisian league left the Stade de Olympique de Sousse. with a point against Algeria league champions, no thanks to a ninety plus one minutes miss by Merzougui which was saved by a 37-year Mathlouthi.
In a first half without much activity, the home side controlled the game, but couldn’t not find a breakthrough after a rather defensive approach by the Algerian team.
It was not until the later part of the second half where the two teams tried to score, but could not find the back of the net.
CR Belouizdad’s penalty miss at the end of the tie will be rued by the league leaders of the Algerian league.
With the result, the two teams are with a point as against Espérance Tunis and Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy who play their first match in the group on Sunday.
The result is refection of Etoile’s season after finishing 6th out of the 7 teams in the league and will have to compete in the relegation group.
Former France 2002 manager Roger Lemerre had to be employed for the third time to help save the season of the Tunisian gaints.
