Cotonsport of Garoua has suffered a zero to one defeat to Tout Puissant Mazembe, in their day three game in Group C of the CAF Confederation cup in Lubumbashi.
23_year_old midfielder Glody Likonza scored the lone goal with four minutes to spare, as Cotonsport suffered their first defeat in the group stage.
Coach Souleymanou Aboubakar of cotonsport made five changes to his starting XI that played a one all tie against AS Otôho D’Oyo last Wednesday, with Tombi Alemi, Otanga Mvouo Jeordon, Houzaifi Youssoupha, Felix Oukine and Okelle_Bothe Pavela, all dropped to the bench or were missing from the match day squad, while Moursou Jean Eric, Brandon Yves Eno, Patient Wasou Goue, Louis Tazoh Afuandji and Mamoudou Hassana were handed starting spots.
As it happened
TP Mazembe started the game on the front foot, with a free kick and three balls recovered in the Coton half just after four minutes.
Eight minutes on, Luzolo played beautifully from the right and got a free kick for TP Mazembe, but the shot from Kinzumbi was cleared out of danger by the cotonsport defense.
The first corner of the game went to cotonsport at the 11 minute, but TP Mazembe’s Ngimbi cleared it at the far post and launched a counter attack through Kinzumbi who in turn picked out Kitambala but goalkeeper Allambatnan Gadin made a good save to thwart away the effort.
TP Mazembe kept knocking, and came close again at the 20th minute With a good cross from Kinzumbi, but cotonsport’s Louis Tazoh Afuandji controlled the ball perfectly on the edge of the area and heads to his goalkeeper ALLAMBATNAN.
TP Mazembe squandered three big chances just after the half an hour mark, with Ngimbi, Kitambala and Likonza leading most of the assaults for the home side.
Another rare chance for cotonsport came at the 40th minute, with an inswing cross that forced goalkeeper Ibrahim Mounkoro into action.
Despite the large domination of TP Mazembe, both sides went to the pause tight zero all.
At the start of the second half, coach Franck Dumas of The Ravens, brought in Patient Mwamba to replace Bossu.
At the 49 minute, Mercey Ngimbi connected well with Glody Likonza whose efforts won Mazembe the first corner kick of the second segment.
Goalkeeper Ibrahim Mounkoro made a good effort to stop cotonsport’s corner kick at the 53rd minute, and quickly launched a counter attack through Phillippes Beni Kinzumbi, but cotonsport regrouped on time, to stop the move.
Japhte Bola Kitambala and Kabaso Chongo wasted glaring chances just after an hour mark.
Kitambala thought he had put the home side in front at the 70th minute, but his efforts was ruled out for offside.
The first yellow card of the game was brandished at the 72nd minute, to cotonsport’s left back, Louis Tazoh for foul play.
More substitutions for TP Mazembe, saw Baleke and Mayombo coming in to replace Kitambala and Kinzumbi respectively.
TP Mazembe finally got the curtain raiser at the 86th minute, through Glody Likonza, from a Tresor Mputu’s assist.
There was no way cotonsport could comeback, as TP Mazembe held tight to secure their second win of the group stage, and temporarily regain top spot in group C, while awaiting the AS Otôho vs Al Masry clash.
Cotonsport are now win less in three group games, after recording two draws against Al Masry and AS Otoho in their previous outings.
