The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has wasted no time to get a Acting Secretary General after the resignation of Morocco’s Mouad Hajji from his position as Secretary General, barely eleven months into office.
CAF’s Commercial Director Abdelmounaïm Bah has been appointed as Acting Secretary General.
An urgent Committee meeting was convened to find a quick replacement for Mouad Hajji whose departure came as a huge surprise. The meeting was held on Tuesday after which Bah was selected.
Abdelmounaïm Bah is also a Moroccan. He will continue to occupy his position as CAF’s Commercial Director, while assuming the position of Acting Secretary General until CAF’s next Executive Committee Meeting.
Bah assumed the position of Commercial Director at CAF in June 2018 and was appointed unanimously.
“The members have full confidence in Bah who has exhibited good qualities since joining CAF, particularly during the (2019) Africa Cup of Nations,” a statement from CAF reads.
Mouad Hajji who succeeded Egyptian Amr Fahmy who was sacked without any official reasons from CAF, vacated his position citing “personal reasons” and expressed the need to “return to Morocco as soon as possible.”
CAF has been under serious scrutiny from FIFA since Amr Fahmy who passed away last month after battling with Cancer for two years, drew FIFA’s attention to some irregularities in the running of the African football powerhouse.
Fahmy was sacked as SG, but FIFA later commissioned an audit into the running of CAF that has produced some intriguing revelations.
Amongst other revelations, the audit from Pricewaterhouse Copper revealed that CAF’s accounting was “unreliable and not trustworthy” with an “understaffed” and “overworked” workforce which was also “demotivated”.
It is not clear what pushed Mouad Hajji out, but CAF is confident that Abdelmounaïm Bah can assume the position cumulatively with his role as Commercial Director until a suitable replacement is found.
