The group stage draw of Africa’s lead club competition (CAF Champions League), was done on Wednesday 9 – without any club from west Africa, yet, promises to be intriguing.

The event took place at the Hilton Pyramids Golf in Cairo, Egypt. The 16 teams all earned the right to enter the big time after they avoided qualifying round casualties.

Group A

1er de Agosto
TP. Mazembe
Zamalek / Generation Foot
Zesco United

Group B

Etoile du Sahel
FC Platinum

Group C

USM Alger
Mamelodi Sundowns
Petro de Luanda
Wydad Casablanca

Group D

Raja Casablanca
JS Kabylie
AS Vita Club
Esperance de Tunis

There are some palatable encounters and football writers are already tipping group D to be the group of death. Group D accommodates holders and 4 time winners Esperance of Tunis, 3 time winners Raja Casablanca, one time winners AS Vita Club, with the weak link looking to be JS Kabylie.

As it has always been, the teams would play the home and away round-robin basis. There are two spots; winner and runner-up of each group. The two teams from group A-D would advance to the 8 team quarterfinal round.
