2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Champions, Rivers United have qualified for the Second Preliminary Round of the 2022/2023 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.
The Port Harcourt-based side made it to the next Preliminary Round despite a 1-0 defeat to Watanga of Liberia in the return leg of the First Preliminary Round on Sunday.
Farsedu’s 14th-minute goal gave Watanga a slim 1-0 win but the Liberian side won the battle but couldn’t win the war.
Rivers United after winning the first leg 3-0 in Port Harcourt qualified for the next round 3-1 on aggregate.
The team will face holders, Wydad Casablanca of Morocco in the next round.
Another Nigerian representative in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, Plateau United pipped Stade Mandji of Gabon 1-0 to also make it to the next Preliminary Round.
Haggai Katoh converted the solitary goal of the game in the 63rd minute to hand Plateau United a 1-0 win in Abuja.
Plateau United earned a 3-2 aggregate win after recording a 2-2 draw in the first leg.
Up next for Plateau United is two-legged cash with Esperance Tunis of Tunisia in the next Preliminary Round.
